Morocco Souks and Sands – A 4-day Adventure through Marrakech and the Sahara

4 min read…

Last November, when my friends and I planned our trip to Morocco, we had no idea we were about to embark on an extraordinary adventure. We kicked off our journey from Ireland, spending a day in vibrant Marrakech before embarking on a three-day Sahara Desert safari.

Day 01 – Marrakech

Marrakech is Morocco’s most popular city, and for good reason. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and the captivating Medina, it’s no wonder tourists are drawn here. A day trip is a perfect opportunity to explore the city’s top attractions and savour the flavours of Moroccan cuisine.

Where to stay in Marrakech?

Most of Marrakech’s attractions are around Medina, Marrakech’s iconic walled city and UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its maze of streets, souks, and the bustling Djemaa el Fnaa square. Within the Medina, staying in a riad—traditional Moroccan houses with central courtyards—offers a peaceful, authentic experience, with many locally owned options to choose from.

Where to eat in Marrakech?

Anywhere in Djemaa el Fnaa! Every restaurant claims to serve the best local cuisine, and they’re right— the quality is consistently good with a great selection of couscous, salads, and tagines.

What to see in a day?

Marrakech offers plenty to see and do, but if you only have one day, we recommend visiting the Bahia Palace and Le Jardin Secret before getting lost in the city’s souks. Each souk offers something unique—Souk Semmarine for high-end textiles and pottery, Rebha Kedima for spices, Souk Smata & Cheratin for colourful slippers, and Souk Haddadine for lantern lovers. Don’t worry if you can’t remember the names—once you’re in the heart of the medina, just let yourself wander and embrace the chaos.

If you have more time, there’s also the Saadian tombs, Badi Palace, Medersa Ben Youssef, and Jardin Majorelle.

The 3-day Sahara Desert Safari

For the next three days, we went on a guided tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, leading us into the heart of the Sahara Desert. From exploring nomadic life, visiting iconic kasbahs, riding camels at sunset and sunrise, and camping in the majestic desert, this tour will certainly be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life.

On day one, get ready for a hotel pick-up in Marrakech and a scenic journey to Mergouza. Along the way, you’ll explore the majestic Atlas mountains and the historic Ait Benhaddou Ksar – a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls. It was a traditional pre-Saharan habitat. Your first night is in a cosy stay at a 4-star hotel.

Day two kicks off your Sahara adventure! In the morning, explore Dades Valley and immerse yourself in the rich Berber culture at a traditional Berber village. Later, ride camels into the golden dunes for a jaw-dropping sunset, try your hand at sandboarding, and spend the night in a lavish Berber desert camp with music, dance, and stargazing. A pro tip – Choose the luxury option while booking.

On your final day, start with an exhilarating ATV ride at sunrise before heading back to Marrakech—it’s a long ride back!

I could talk about this tour all day, but to keep it short and sweet: set your expectations high, because it’s guaranteed to surpass them.

Here’s some useful information

  1. Grab an Airalo e-sim for quick local internet.
  2. Vegetarian options are limited, and don’t be shocked if fish or eggs are considered “vegetarian.” If you’re a true vegetarian, just be specific about it!
  3. Tipping isn’t mandatory, but guides and hotel staff do expect it.
  4. The dinner on your first night of the desert safari isn’t great. If you’re staying at Hotel Kenzi Bougafer in Tinghir, there’s a cafe—Restaurant La Zone—right across the street.
  5. Choose between standard and luxury for the safari. The luxury option offers a tent with a private washroom on the second night, while the standard booking includes a shared washroom.
