Luxembourg: Tiny Country, Big Vibe – Our 2-Day Chill Trip with Friends

After a year that felt like a whirlwind with lots of travels, Kavi and I decided to wrap up our calendar with something a little different. This time, we teamed up with friends (and their super-cute 2-year-old) and landed in Luxembourg, a country so small you can cross it in under an hour, and its population is less than 700,000.

We booked ourselves into an Ibis near the airport, rented a car for convenience (though, fun fact: public transport here is totally free and impressively reliable), and set out with zero expectations.

For me, Luxembourg wasn’t about ticking off must-see sights or chasing the next big photo spot. It’s more of a vibe—cosy cafes, beautiful buildings, friendly locals who genuinely don’t care if you’re a tourist (in the best possible way), and air so clean that every picture comes out looking like a postcard.

My wife, on the other hand, missed having a longer list of things to do, and honestly, she’s not wrong. Most people pop into Luxembourg for a quick day trip from neighboring countries.

But for us, it was all about soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying good company, and wandering a walkable, charming city that runs at its own pace.

Here’s what we did with our two days in Luxembourg—think of this as your go-to guide if you’re planning a laid-back trip to one of Europe’s tiniest, friendliest countries.

Day 1: City Wanders, Underground Tunnels & Chocolate Breaks

Bock Casemates, Chocolate house Nathalie Bonn, Chem de la Corniche, Grund district, Palais Grand-Ducal, Notre Dame Cathedral, Place Guillaume II, Panoramic elevator of Pfaffenthal

We spent our first day exploring Luxembourg City’s centre—super walkable and easy to cover in just a few hours. The big highlight is the Bock Casemates, a maze of underground tunnels that the city is built around. From there, we wandered through the Grund district, took in the views from Chemin de la Corniche, and checked out spots like Palais Grand-Ducal, Notre Dame Cathedral, Place Guillaume II, and the panoramic elevator of Pfaffenthal.

If you’re driving, park at Knuedler or the Esprit car park—they’re the most convenient for getting around on foot.

Between all that walking, we kept finding ourselves back at Chocolate House Nathalie Bonn. Friendly staff, amazing hot chocolate, and a menu full of treats—honestly, it’s the perfect comfort stop.

Day 2: Castles, Trails & Tasty Eats

Vianden Castle, Coco Nela, Mullerthal trail, Moein Masala / Krishna Vilas

We kicked off the day with breakfast at the Ibis before heading out on a 45-minute drive to Vianden Castle—a stunning fortress dating back to the 4th century. The little café inside is great for a quick snack if you need a break from all the castle exploring.

Next up: lunch at Coco Nela Brasserie, where the cocktails and food hit the spot. After refuelling, we made our way to the Mullerthal trail in Echternach (Luxembourg’s own “Swiss Alps”). There are three main hiking routes, allowing you to choose one and unwind in nature for a few hours.

For dinner, if you’re craving Indian food, we highly recommend Moein Masala or Krishna Vilas—both solid picks! And if you’ve got your own car, park at Parking Fort Neipperg (free for two hours).

Luxembourg is one of those places—you might fall in love with its laid-back charm, or you might just feel like ticking it off your list. There’s really no right answer, and that’s part of the fun. Our advice? Give it a try for yourself!

It’s super easy to get here or move on—regular trains connect Luxembourg to other European cities (even London, if you’re feeling adventurous). You can do Luxembourg as a relaxed weekend, or just hop in for a day trip if you’re already exploring Europe.

Come for the vibe, stay for the chocolate, and let us know how your adventure goes. Happy travels!
