Belgium – The perfect 3 day itinerary

5 min read…

To celebrate getting my Irish passport, I spontaneously booked a solo-trip to Belgium, drawn by its easy-to-explore cities and excellent train connections. The perfect last-minute holiday was a breeze to plan!

Belgium, often overshadowed by nearby hotspots like London, Amsterdam, and Paris, is a hidden gem. I was instantly smitten by its stunning architecture, gorgeous cathedrals, mouthwatering waffles, and rustic charm.

Here is my recommended 3-day itinerary to experience the best of Belgium: Dinant, Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp.

I recommend staying in Ghent – it’s perfectly placed to explore nearby cities. I booked a cosy hostel through Booking.com near Gent-Dampoort station, but you can also find great options by Gent-Sint-Pieters (Ghent Central).

  1. Grab an Airalo e-sim for quick local internet.
  2. Install SNCB appit’s your ultimate guide for all transport in Belgium, from trains and buses to trams.
  3. Dutch is the main language, followed by French and a bit of German, but English is common in the cities.
  4. As an Irish traveler, I found the food super affordable – indulge in Dürüm kebabs, Belgian frites, chocolates, macchiatos, and, of course, waffles!
  5. Paying on trams and buses is easy with your contactless card.

Day 1: Morning in Dinant, afternoon in Brussels

Upon arrival at Brussels airport, I headed straight to Dinant, a charming city on the Meuse River, famous for its stunning Citadel perched on steep cliffs behind colorful houses.

The Citadel is Dinant’s star attraction. Steeped in history, it’s survived battles, served as a prison, and now hosts a museum. For just €12, you can explore the Citadel and take a scenic cable car ride. After enjoying the stunning views, make sure to stop by the Notre Dame de Dinant church on your way back.

In the afternoon, head to Brussels – half a day is plenty to explore the historic center, where most sights are within walking distance. Be sure to check out these must-see spots:

  1. Grand Palace: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s beautiful town squares.
  2. Royal Gallery of Saint Hubert: A 19th-century gallery lined with numerous boutiques and restaurants is not to be missed.
  3. Royal Palace of Brussels
  4. The Atomium: a landmark modernist building in Brussels, Belgium
  5. St Michael’s Cathedral

En route to Brussels, I made a quick stop in Leuven to catch up with a friend.

Day 2: Morning in Ghent, afternoon in Bruges

Kickstart your day with a delicious breakfast at Caffe Rosario. Their Latte Macchiatos are pure magic!

Chicken sandwich & Dark chocolate Macchiato – €13

Ghent is a delightful town made for strolling. Check out these must-see spots on Google Maps. Or click here to get an overview of your walking route

  1. Gravensteen Castle (€13 for a self-guided tour)
  2. Korenlei – You can take a boat tour for €8, but I saved mine for Bruges.
  3. Graslei
  4. St Michael’s Bridge
  5. St Bravo’s Cathedral
  6. Graffiti Street

Don’t miss Gravensteen Castle! Whether you choose the historical or comedy audio tour, it’s a treat. I picked the comedy one—totally loved it.

After Ghent, catch a train to Brugge and lace up – more adventures await on foot! Bruges is truly a beautiful city and one of those fairytale villages of Europe. Here are the highlights –

  1. Minnewater Lake
  2. Boat tour (€15)
  3. Rozenhoekdaai
  4. Burg Square
  5. Belfry Tower of Bruges
  6. Provincial court
  7. Chocolate museum

Alternatively, use this 27-minute walking guide. I skipped the Belfry Tower and chocolate museum – saving cash for other treats!

Day 3: Antwerp

Antwerp, one of Belgium’s biggest gems, wows with its jaw-dropping train station, dazzling diamond district, and vibrant fashion scene.

Must-see highlights –

  1. Antwerp Central Station – a showstopper!
  2. Diamond District
  3. Meir district
  4. Ruben house – currently under renovation
  5. Cathedral of Our lady
  6. Grote Markt
  7. Chocolate museum – a dream for chocoholics! includes chocolate-tasting.
  8. Antwerp Zoo

Here’s the 1hr walking route. The Antwerp city pass covers many attractions and could be super useful.

Belgium is pure magic—stunning architecture, cosy canals, epic castles, lovely people, and amazing food! Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a road trip, you’re bound to love it. Don’t miss out—use this 3-day Belgium itinerary to plan your next adventure!
