3 Days in Bratislava & Budapest: Thermal Baths, Cherry Blossoms & Unexpected Magic

Some trips are carefully planned. Others quietly sneak into your heart while you're busy looking at maps.

Kavi and I spent 1 day in Bratislava and 2 days in Budapest over Easter weekend in early April, expecting a nice little Central European getaway. What we got instead was a whirlwind of colorful old towns, thermal baths, sunrise bridges, cherry blossoms, river cruises, and enough chimney cake to make our dentist mildly concerned. 😄

The best part? Both cities felt surprisingly warm and welcoming—not just in temperature, but in spirit.

If you’re planning a short European escape, here’s exactly how we spent our three magical days.

Day 1: Bratislava — The Capital That Feels Like a Secret

We landed in Bratislava and started the trip at Urban House — and honestly, if breakfast could flirt, this place would.

Think hanging plants, stylish interiors, sunlight pouring through the windows, and a menu that makes you want to order one sensible dish and three emotional support pastries. 🌿☕

Wandering Through Bratislava Old Town

Bratislava’s old town is wonderfully compact. You don’t really visit it — you stumble through it, getting distracted every few minutes by pastel buildings, quirky statues, and charming little squares.

As we walked around, two things became absolutely non-negotiable:

Bratislava Castle

After exploring the old town, we headed up to Bratislava Castle.

We didn’t buy tickets to go inside, and honestly, we didn’t feel like we missed out. The real reward is the view over the Danube and the city rooftops.

The castle itself looks like a giant upside-down table from a distance — a fact you’ll never be able to unsee now. You’re welcome. 😄

Sunset Options: UFO Tower or Eurovea?

Bratislava gives you two excellent evening personalities:

Getting Around Bratislava

🚕 Bolt was a lifesaver.

We stayed at Fleur Créme Apartment, and using Bolt made everything incredibly easy. Compared to many Western European capitals, taxi rides felt surprisingly affordable.

In the evening, we took a bus from Bratislava to Budapest and settled in for the next chapter of the trip.

Day 2: Budapest — Thermal Baths & Danube Nights

A Morning at Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Our first Budapest day was dedicated to Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

We booked an all-inclusive package with a private room, massage, welcome drinks, snacks, and access to all pools.

The massage wasn’t life-changing, but the overall experience absolutely was.

♨️ Pro tip: Go as early as possible.

By late morning, the crowds increase dramatically. Early access means steaming outdoor pools, fewer people, and a much more relaxing atmosphere.

And yes, sitting in warm mineral water while the cool morning air floats around you feels every bit as wonderful as it sounds.

Lunch: Goulash & More Waiting

For lunch, we went to Retro Goulash House.

Be prepared: there’s usually a queue.

But if you’re in Budapest, trying a proper Hungarian goulash is almost a civic duty.

After lunch, we walked four minutes to Chimney Cake Point because apparently our travel philosophy had become “one meal, one chimney cake.” 😄

Cat Museum: A Purrfect Detour

🐱 In the evening, we visited Cat Museum Budapest.

It’s a small stop, but for cat lovers, it’s dangerous. You go in thinking “We’ll spend 20 minutes here” and leave much later after making several new feline friends.

Lots of cats, lots of petting, and a surprisingly cozy little museum.

Sunset & Danube Cruise

🌇 For sunset, we walked along the Danube before boarding a night cruise.

Budapest after dark is a completely different city.

When the Parliament building, bridges, and riverside facades light up, the whole city seems to glow gold against the water. It was easily one of the highlights of the trip.

Day 3: Sunrise at Liberty Bridge & Cherry Blossoms at Buda Castle

The Sunrise That Made Us Wake Up Before Dawn

We dragged ourselves out of bed before sunrise to visit Liberty Bridge.

And wow.

Blue skies, the Danube promenade, the olive-green bridge, and bright yellow trams gliding across it — it looked like someone had carefully arranged the colours for a painting.

🌅 Absolutely worth the early alarm.

Buda Castle & Fisherman’s Bastion

After breakfast in Cafe Brunch, we headed to Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion.

Yes, it was crowded.

Yes, it was still worth it.

You can either take the Budavári Sikló uphill or walk up the hill if you’re feeling energetic.

The views over the Parliament and the Danube are some of the best in the city.

Cherry Blossom Surprise

🌸 Because it was cherry blossom season, we walked to Tóth Árpád sétány.

We expected a few blossoms.

Instead, we found a beautiful tree-lined promenade glowing in the evening light, with couples, families, and photographers all enjoying the moment.

What was meant to be a quick photo stop turned into one of our favourite memories of Budapest.
